Summary

Psydrax odorata, commonly known as Alahe’e, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to coastal forests, lowland dry forests, and scrublands in Australia, New Guinea, and the Hawaiian Islands. It belongs to the coffee family, Rubiaceae, and typically ranges from 6–30 ft (1.8–9.1 m) in height with a spread of 3–7 ft (0.91–2.13 m). The trunk can reach up to 4 in (10 cm) in diameter. Psydrax odorata is characterized by its glossy green, elliptic leaves that are up to 3.5 inches (89 mm) long, and it produces clusters of small, fragrant white flowers during the winter months. The flowers are not particularly showy but are valued for their scent. Following flowering, the plant bears round, black fruits that are 3/8 inch wide and are attractive to birds.

The Alahe’e is appreciated for its low water requirements, making it suitable for xeriscaping and drought-tolerant gardens. It thrives in full sun and can adapt to a variety of soil conditions, provided they have medium drainage. This species is used in landscaping for its ornamental foliage and as a windbreak or screen in coastal areas. While it is generally disease-resistant, it can occasionally suffer from root rot if overwatered. Gardeners should be aware of its potential to spread if conditions are favorable.CC BY-SA 4.0
