Summary

Pteronia paniculata, commonly known as Gum-Bush, is an evergreen or semi-deciduous shrub native to the arid and semi-arid regions of Namibia and South Africa, particularly thriving in scrublands and rocky outcrops. It typically grows to a height of 5-7 feet (1.5-2.1 meters) and a width of 3-5 feet (0.9-1.5 meters). The plant has a bushy habit with slender, furrowed branches and needle-like, incurved, green leaves that are sticky and aromatic, arranged in opposite pairs. During the spring and summer, it produces clusters of small, yellow and green flowers at the branch tips, which are attractive to pollinators but not particularly showy.

Gum-Bush is valued for its drought tolerance and aromatic foliage, making it suitable for xeriscaping and as a feature in water-wise gardens. It is often used in rock gardens, as a low-maintenance shrub in arid landscapes, or for habitat restoration in its native range. This species requires full sun exposure, minimal water once established, and well-drained soils. While it is generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
