Estimated Native Range
Summary
Puccinellia rupestris, commonly known as British Alkaligrass, is a perennial grass native to coastal cliffs, salt marshes, and alkaline soils in Western Europe, including the British Isles. It typically grows to a height and width of 0.5-2 feet (0.2-0.6 meters), forming dense tufts of narrow, bluish-green leaves. The inflorescences are spike-like and not particularly showy, with flowering occurring in late spring to early summer. This grass is adapted to harsh, saline environments where few other plants can thrive.
British Alkaligrass is valued for its ability to tolerate salt and poor soils, making it useful for erosion control in coastal areas and for revegetating disturbed saline sites. It is also used in ornamental garden settings for its fine-textured foliage and as a low-maintenance ground cover. In cultivation, it requires full sun to part shade and can tolerate a range of soil moisture conditions, though it prefers medium to fast-draining soils. While it is not known for significant pest or disease issues, it may struggle in non-alkaline soils or areas without adequate drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
