Summary
Pulmonaria mollis, commonly known as Soft Lungwort, is a semi-evergreen perennial herb native to a variety of habitats across Europe and Asia, including Germany, China, Turkey, Poland, Ukraine, Mongolia, Bulgaria, and Russia. It is typically found in the understory of deciduous forests, on meadow slopes, and in stony places that offer partial to full shade. This species reaches a modest height of 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) with a similar spread and is characterized by its hairy, ovate leaves and clusters of funnel-shaped flowers that change from pink to blue as they mature, blooming in early to mid-spring.
Soft Lungwort is valued for its bicolored flowers and the textural interest of its foliage, which makes it an attractive ground cover or border plant in shady gardens. It thrives in moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter and prefers cool, shaded conditions, mimicking its native forest floor environment. While it is low maintenance, it benefits from division every few years to maintain vigor. Pulmonaria mollis is also appreciated for its medicinal properties, historically used to treat lung ailments, hence the common name "Lungwort." Potential problems include mildew and rust, especially in humid conditions or when airflow is poor.CC BY-SA 4.0
