Estimated Native Range
Summary
Pulmonaria obscura, commonly known as unspotted lungwort, is an herbaceous evergreen perennial native to the understory of deciduous and mixed forests in Europe and W. Siberia. It typically grows up to 12 inches tall and features a basal rosette of heart-shaped leaves. The plant produces clusters of small, bell-shaped flowers in early spring, which emerge pink and mature to a red-violet hue, adding subtle color to shade gardens. The flowers are particularly valued for their early bloom time and are considered moderately showy.
Unspotted lungwort is appreciated for its low-maintenance nature and ability to thrive in shady conditions, making it an excellent ground cover for woodland gardens and shaded borders. It is also known for its medicinal uses, historically used to treat lung ailments. This species prefers consistently moist, well-drained, humus-rich soils and can tolerate poorly drained sites to some extent. It requires partial to full shade and benefits from a layer of mulch to maintain soil moisture. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew in overly humid conditions. Pulmonaria obscura is not commonly invasive but should be monitored to ensure it does not spread beyond desired areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
