Summary
Pyrola asarifolia, commonly known as liverleaf wintergreen, bog wintergreen, or pink wintergreen, is a perennial herb native to coniferous and mixed forests, as well as forest margins in western North America, particularly in the Pacific Northwest and northern California. It typically grows to a height of 1 foot (0.3 meters) and a width of 0.6-0.7 feet (0.18-0.21 meters). This plant is characterized by its evergreen leaves that maintain their green color throughout the winter, contributing to its common name. The leaves are rounded, resembling those of the liverleaf, hence the name "liverleaf wintergreen." It produces clusters of delicate flowers that can range in color from white to pink and red, blooming in the summer and adding a subtle charm to shaded garden areas.
Liverleaf wintergreen is valued for its year-round foliage and attractive summer flowers. It is an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and naturalized areas. Gardeners appreciate its adaptability to a range of light conditions, from full sun to full shade. It requires medium amounts of water and thrives in soils with medium drainage. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can be sensitive to overly dry conditions and may require additional watering during prolonged dry spells.CC BY-SA 4.0
