Summary

Pyrola media, commonly known as Intermediate Wintergreen, is an herbaceous evergreen perennial native to coniferous and mixed forests, as well as peat bogs and moorlands in Europe and Western Asia. It typically grows 6-12 inches tall and features a basal rosette of glossy, dark green leaves. The plant produces a single erect flowering stem that bears clusters of nodding, bell-shaped white or pale pink flowers from July to August, which are modestly showy and attract pollinators.

Intermediate Wintergreen is valued for its evergreen foliage and delicate flowers, which add interest to woodland gardens and shaded borders. It thrives in cool, moist, acidic soils rich in organic matter and prefers partial to full shade, mimicking its natural understory habitat. While not commonly used, it can serve as ground cover in suitable environments. It requires consistent moisture and does not tolerate drought well. There are no widely known cultivars or significant problems with pests and diseases, but it can be sensitive to soil disturbances and changes in its environment.CC BY-SA 4.0
