Summary
Quercus buckleyi, commonly known as Texas Red Oak or Buckley’s Oak, is a deciduous tree native to the Edwards Plateau and Cross Timbers regions of Central Texas. It is typically found in well-drained limestone soils, often on slopes and in canyons, which are part of the oak savannas and woodlands. This species can grow to a height of 30-60 feet (9-18 meters) with a width of 20-45 feet (6-14 meters), and it develops a rounded canopy with age. Buckley’s Oak has dark green, glossy leaves that turn a vibrant red or orange-red in the fall, adding to its ornamental value.
Texas Red Oak is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to adapt to various soil types, although it prefers alkaline soils. It is used in urban landscapes, as a shade tree, and for its striking fall color. It requires full sun to thrive and benefits from medium water availability, with medium or slow drainage. While it is not known for significant disease problems, oak wilt can be a concern, and it is advisable to avoid injuring the tree, as wounds can make it more susceptible to this disease.CC BY-SA 4.0
