Estimated Native Range
Summary
Quercus myrsinifolia, commonly known as Bamboo Leaf Oak or Chinese Ring-Cupped Oak, is an evergreen tree native to a variety of habitats in East Asia, including broad-leaved evergreen forests, forest edges, and mountainous regions in east central and southeast China, Japan, Korea, Laos, northern Thailand, and Vietnam. It can grow up to 66 feet tall and is characterized by its narrow, elongated leaves with finely serrated margins, resembling bamboo leaves. The tree’s bark is dark gray and fissured, adding to its ornamental value. Bamboo Leaf Oak produces inconspicuous flowers followed by distinctive acorns with a ring-like cup at the base.
This oak is valued for its adaptability to different soil types, including acidic and clay soils, and its ability to tolerate both drought and moderate shade, making it suitable for urban environments and varied landscape settings. It is often used as a shade tree, for screening, or as a specimen tree in large gardens and parks. While it is relatively low-maintenance, it is important to provide young trees with adequate water until established. Bamboo Leaf Oak is resistant to many pests and diseases, but can occasionally suffer from oak wilt or root rot if drainage is poor.CC BY-SA 4.0
