Estimated Native Range
Summary
Randia aculeata, commonly known as White Indigoberry, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to a variety of habitats including coastal thickets, limestone outcrops, and dry to moist forests in Florida, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and South America as far south as Colombia. It typically grows to a height of 7-20 feet tall and is recognized by its dense, rounded form with stiff, spiny branches. White Indigoberry produces fragrant, white, tubular flowers throughout the year, with peaks in spring and summer. The flowers are followed by small, spherical, edible berries that turn black when ripe and are attractive to birds.
White Indigoberry is valued for its ornamental qualities, including its glossy green leaves and the contrast between its white flowers and dark berries. It is used in landscaping for hedges, borders, and as a specimen plant, particularly in regions with a similar climate to its native range. The plant prefers full sun to partial shade, well-drained soils, and has moderate drought tolerance once established. While it is not particularly demanding regarding soil type, it thrives in limestone-based substrates. In traditional medicine, various parts of the plant are used for their purported health benefits.CC BY-SA 4.0
