Summary
Ranunculus aquatilis, commonly known as Common Water-crowfoot, is an aquatic perennial herb native to still or slow-flowing freshwater habitats such as ponds, ditches, and streams in Europe, western North America, and northwest Africa. It typically forms dense mats on the water’s surface, with distinctive branching, thread-like underwater leaves and toothed floater leaves that can vary in shape. The plant produces white flowers with a yellow center, which bloom from April to August, adding a delicate beauty to water features. The flowers are relatively showy and attract pollinators when they emerge above the water’s surface.
Common Water-crowfoot is valued for its ability to oxygenate and purify water, making it a beneficial addition to ponds and water gardens. It is also used in aquariums for its ornamental foliage and flowers. However, it requires a freshwater habitat and does not tolerate polluted or saline water. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers a water depth of 6 inches to 3 feet. While it can be a beautiful and ecologically useful plant, Ranunculus aquatilis can become invasive outside its native range, so it is essential to consult local guidelines before introducing it to new areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
