Estimated Native Range
Summary
Ranunculus gouanii, commonly known as Gouan’s Buttercup, is a perennial herb that is native to the moist meadows and stream banks of the Pyrenees and surrounding areas in France and Spain. It typically grows to a height of 0.8-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters) and a width of 0.3-0.5 feet (0.09-0.2 meters). This species forms a low mound of glossy green leaves, with cup-shaped, shiny yellow flowers appearing in the spring that are moderately showy and attract pollinators.
Gouan’s Buttercup is valued for its vibrant yellow flowers which can brighten up rock gardens, borders, and waterside plantings. It is relatively easy to maintain but requires consistently moist soil and does not tolerate drought well. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers soils with medium drainage. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can suffer from root rot if the soil is too wet. It is not known to be invasive and does not have aggressive roots, making it a safe choice for most garden settings. However, all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so care should be taken if planting in areas accessed by pets or children.CC BY-SA 4.0
