Estimated Native Range
Summary
Raoulia albosericea, commonly known as New Zealand Scabweed, is a perennial herb native to alpine regions and subalpine grasslands of the North Island of New Zealand. It forms a low, dense mat reaching a height of approximately 0.2 feet (0.06 meters) and can spread to about 1 foot (0.3 meters) wide. The plant is characterized by its silvery-white foliage and small, cushion-like growth habit, which helps it survive in its harsh native environment. During the summer months, it produces inconspicuous yellow and cream flowers that add to its ornamental value, though they are not particularly showy.
New Zealand Scabweed is valued for its unique texture and foliage color in rock gardens, alpine gardens, and as a ground cover. It is also used in green roof plantings due to its low-growing habit and tolerance of dry conditions. In cultivation, it requires well-drained soil, preferably gritty or sandy, and can tolerate drought once established. It thrives in full sun to part shade and benefits from protection from excessive winter wetness to prevent root rot. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to fungal diseases in humid or overly moist conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
