Raukaua simplex, commonly known as haumakāroa, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the diverse ecosystems of New Zealand, specifically thriving in lowland to subalpine forests and often found in shaded understories and along forest margins from the Waihou River to Stewart Island. It can grow up to 26 feet (8 meters) in height and is notable for its heteroblastic growth, meaning it exhibits different leaf forms at different stages of growth. Juvenile leaves are palmately compound with deep lobes, while adult leaves are simpler with serrated edges. The plant was first described by Georg Forster in 1786 as Panax simplex and was later reclassified to the genus Raukaua in 1997.

Raukaua simplex is valued for its attractive foliage and adaptability, making it a suitable choice for shaded garden areas or as a background plant in larger landscapes. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of light conditions from partial shade to full sun, although it thrives best in dappled light. While not widely known for its flowers or fruit, it contributes to the biodiversity of garden ecosystems by providing habitat for native fauna.
