Estimated Native Range
Summary
Reineckea carnea, commonly known as Chinese Lucky Grass, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the forest floors and shaded areas of Northern and Central China and Japan. It typically grows to a height of 0.9 feet (0.3 meters) and spreads to about 1 foot (0.3 meters), forming dense clumps of glossy, dark green leaves. The plant produces small, bell-shaped pink flowers on short spikes in the spring and summer, which are modest in showiness but add a delicate charm to shaded garden areas.
Chinese Lucky Grass is valued for its ability to thrive in shaded conditions where other plants may struggle. It is an excellent ground cover for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and underplanting beneath larger shrubs or trees. This plant is also appreciated for its low maintenance requirements and its evergreen foliage, which provides year-round interest. In cultivation, it prefers part shade to full shade, consistent moisture, and well-drained soils rich in organic matter. While generally pest-free, it can occasionally suffer from root rot if the soil is too wet.CC BY-SA 4.0
