Summary
Rhododendron dauricum, commonly known as Dahurian Rhododendron, is a semi-evergreen shrub native to the mixed forests, forest edges, and mountain slopes of East Asia, including regions of northern China, Korea, Japan, and Russia’s Far East. It typically grows to 1.5 meters (5 feet) tall and broad, featuring a compact habit. The Dahurian Rhododendron is notable for its early-blooming purple flowers that emerge in late winter or early spring, often before the dark green leaves, adding a splash of color to the garden when few other plants are in bloom. The cultivar ‘Mid-winter’ is particularly admired for its bright pink flowers and has been recognized with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
The Dahurian Rhododendron is valued for its early flowering period and its ability to withstand cold temperatures down to −20 °C (−4 °F). It is often used in woodland gardens, shrub borders, and as a foundation plant, providing early spring interest. This rhododendron thrives in part shade, requiring medium amounts of water and well-drained, acidic soil enriched with leaf mould. Although it is hardy, it benefits from a sheltered position to protect its early blooms from late winter frosts.CC BY-SA 4.0
