Summary
Rhododendron fortunei, commonly known as Chinese Rhododendron, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to forest margins, mountain slopes, and alpine regions of China, as well as Myanmar and Vietnam. It typically grows to 3–12 meters (9.8–39.4 ft) in height and is known for its leathery, oblong to oblong-elliptic leaves, which measure 8–14.5 cm (3+1⁄8–5+3⁄4 in) by 3–9.2 cm (1+3⁄16–3+5⁄8 in). The Chinese Rhododendron blooms from April to May, producing trusses of 6–12 campanulate flowers that range in color from white to pink and are notably fragrant. The flowers are showy and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
This species is valued for its ornamental flowers and is often used in woodland gardens, shrub borders, and as a specimen plant. It requires acidic, well-drained soil and benefits from mulching to maintain soil moisture. While it can tolerate full sun in cooler climates, in warmer areas it prefers part shade to protect its foliage from scorching. Rhododendron fortunei is susceptible to pests such as vine weevils and diseases like root rot and powdery mildew, especially if the soil is not well-drained. It is also important to note that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested.CC BY-SA 4.0
