Rhododendron impeditum, commonly known as Dwarf Purple Rhododendron, is an evergreen shrub native to alpine regions, specifically the mountainous areas of southwestern Sichuan and northwest Yunnan in China, where it thrives at altitudes of 8,200-15,100 feet. It is a slow-growing plant that typically reaches a modest size of 24 inches in both height and width, making it suitable for small gardens and rockeries. The Dwarf Purple Rhododendron has a dense, mounded form with small, scaly, ovate to elliptic leaves that are blue-green in color.

This species is particularly noted for its showy flowers, which bloom in late spring to early summer. The blooms range in color from purple to violet and rose-lavender, creating a striking contrast against the foliage. The plant’s compact size and vibrant flowers make it a popular choice for rock gardens, foundation plantings, and as a specimen in mixed borders. Rhododendron impeditum requires acidic, well-drained soil and partial shade to full sun conditions. It is relatively low maintenance but benefits from mulching and protection from harsh winter winds.
