Summary

Rhoicissus digitata, commonly known as Baboon Grape or Dune Grape, is an evergreen vine native to the woodland and forest margins, as well as rocky outcrops and dunes of southern Africa. It is a vigorous climber that can reach lengths of up to 15 meters when supported. The plant features glossy, palmate leaves that are divided into three to five leaflets and tendrils that aid in climbing. The inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers bloom from spring to early summer, followed by attractive purple-black berries that are enjoyed by birds and other wildlife.

Baboon Grape is valued for its fast growth and dense foliage, making it an excellent choice for quickly covering arbors, trellises, fences, or walls. It is also used to create shaded areas in gardens or to add greenery to urban landscapes. In cultivation, it requires well-drained soil and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to partial shade. While it is drought-tolerant once established, regular watering promotes lush growth. This vine is also known for its traditional medicinal uses, including the treatment of various ailments by local cultures. Some potential problems include susceptibility to mealybugs and scale insects.CC BY-SA 4.0
