Estimated Native Range
Summary
Rhus virens var. choriophylla, commonly known as Evergreen Sumac, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the limestone hills, canyons, and arid regions of the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 17-23 feet (5-7 meters) and a width of 13-16 feet (4-5 meters), with a dense, rounded form. The foliage is dark green and glossy, adding year-round interest to the landscape. During the summer, it produces clusters of small, cream to white flowers, which are followed by red berries that persist into winter and are attractive to birds and wildlife.
Evergreen Sumac is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, rocky soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings. It is also used for erosion control on slopes and in reclamation projects. This species is well-suited for use as a screen or hedge, and its evergreen foliage provides a strong visual anchor in the garden throughout the year. In cultivation, it requires minimal maintenance, tolerating full sun to part shade and preferring well-drained soils. While generally disease-free, it can occasionally suffer from root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
