Estimated Native Range
Summary
Ribes echinellum, commonly known as Miccosukee Gooseberry, is a deciduous shrub native to the southeastern United States, particularly found in wetland margins, stream banks, and moist woodlands. This species is adapted to the humid subtropical climate of the region, thriving in areas with wet summers and mild winters. It typically grows up to 150 cm (5 feet) tall and is characterized by its spiny nodes, which are points on the stem where leaves attach. The shrub produces clusters of whitish to pale yellow flowers in the spring, which are modest in size but can be quite attractive upon close inspection. Following the flowering season, it bears distinctive purple, spine-covered berries that are visually interesting and can attract wildlife.
The Miccosukee Gooseberry is valued for its unique berries and its ability to thrive in moist, partly shaded environments. It is used in native plant gardens, as a specimen in mixed shrub borders, and for naturalizing in wetland restoration projects. It prefers consistent moisture but is adaptable to various soil types, provided they have slow to medium drainage. While it can tolerate full sun, it often performs best with some afternoon shade in hotter climates. Gardeners should be aware that the spines can make handling the plant somewhat challenging, and it may require protection from browsing animals.CC BY-SA 4.0
