Estimated Native Range
Summary
Ribes petraeum, commonly known as rock currant or Bieberstein’s rock currant, is a deciduous shrub native to rocky slopes, forest margins, and alpine regions of Europe to Mongolia. It typically grows to a height of 3-6 feet (1-2 meters) and a similar width, with a bushy habit. The plant is characterized by its three-lobed leaves and small, bell-shaped pink flowers that bloom in spring, followed by edible black berries. The flowers are modest in appearance but attract pollinators such as bees.
Rock currant is valued for its ability to thrive in poor soils and its low maintenance requirements. It is often used in naturalistic plantings, rock gardens, and as a wildlife attractant. In cultivation, it prefers well-drained soil, tolerates a range of pH levels, and requires moderate water. It is best situated in full sun to part shade. While generally disease-resistant, Ribes petraeum can be susceptible to powdery mildew and should be monitored for pests such as aphids. This shrub is not known for aggressive roots or significant invasiveness issues.CC BY-SA 4.0
