Estimated Native Range
Summary
Ribes roezlii, commonly known as Sierra Gooseberry, is a deciduous shrub native to the chaparral and mixed evergreen forests of California and the Klamath Mountains in Oregon. It typically grows to a height of around 1.2 meters (3.9 ft) and is characterized by its spiny branches. The leaves are hairless to hairy or woolly, up to 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) long, and divided into 3 or 5 rounded, toothed lobes. The inflorescence consists of a solitary flower or a raceme of 2 or 3 flowers, which are pendulous and wind-pollinated. Each flower has five reflexed red-purple sepals and a tube-shaped ring of smaller white or pinkish petals, with prominent stamens and stigmas. The fruit is a distinctive red or purple berry, up to 2.5 centimeters long, covered in thick, long spines, and lacks a dried flower remnant at the end.
Sierra Gooseberry is appreciated for its unique, spiny berries and is used in native plant gardens and naturalized areas. It is drought-tolerant, making it suitable for xeriscaping. The plant provides habitat and food for wildlife, including birds and small mammals. In cultivation, Sierra Gooseberry thrives in full sun to partial shade, requires low amounts of water once established, and prefers well-drained soils. It is relatively low-maintenance but can be susceptible to powdery mildew and rust. Gardeners should handle the plant with care due to its spines.CC BY-SA 4.0
