Estimated Native Range
Summary
Rodgersia aesculifolia, commonly known as Rodgers Flower, is a deciduous perennial herb that is native to moist forest margins and stream banks in North Central, South Central, and Southeastern China, as well as Nei Mongol. It can reach up to 2 meters (7 feet) in height and 1 meter (3 feet) in width. This plant is characterized by its large, textured palmate leaves that can grow up to 25 cm (10 inches) long, resembling those of the horse chestnut, which is reflected in its specific epithet ’aesculifolia’ (chestnut-leaved). During the summer, Rodgersia aesculifolia produces showy 60 cm (24 inch) erect panicles composed of tiny, star-shaped flowers that range in color from white to pink.
Rodgers Flower is valued for its bold foliage and architectural form, making it a striking addition to shade gardens, woodland plantings, and waterside borders. It thrives in moist conditions and can be used to create a lush, tropical look in temperate climates. While it prefers full sun to part shade, it requires protection from intense afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch. Rodgersia aesculifolia is relatively easy to maintain but may require additional watering during dry periods. It is not commonly afflicted by diseases or pests, although slugs and snails can sometimes be a problem. This plant is not known for aggressive roots or significant invasiveness issues.CC BY-SA 4.0
