Estimated Native Range
Summary
Rodgersia pinnata, commonly known as Rodgersia, is a deciduous perennial herb native to the moist woodland settings, along stream banks, and in mountainous regions of China and Myanmar. It typically grows to 120 cm (47 in) tall and 75 cm (30 in) wide. The plant is characterized by its large, textured palmate/pinnate leaves that can reach up to 90 cm (35 in) in length, with 5-9 leaflets, creating a bold, architectural presence in the garden. During the summer, Rodgersia pinnata produces 60 cm (24 in) erect panicles of tiny, star-shaped flowers on reddish-green stems. While the species has white flowers, cultivars may display a range of colors including white, cream, pink, or red, with ’Fireworks’ being a notable red-flowered cultivar.
Rodgersia pinnata is valued for its dramatic foliage and attractive flower panicles, making it a striking addition to shade gardens, woodland plantings, and borders. It is particularly effective when massed or grouped. This plant thrives in moist, humus-rich soil and benefits from a location with full sun to part shade. While it prefers consistent moisture, it requires well-drained soil to prevent root rot. Rodgersia pinnata can be susceptible to slug and snail damage, and in hot climates, it may require additional shade to prevent leaf scorch.CC BY-SA 4.0
