Estimated Native Range
Summary
Rodgersia podophylla, commonly known as Rodgersia, is an herbaceous perennial native to moist woodland areas and along streams in Japan and Korea. It can grow up to 7 feet tall and is known for its large, palmate leaves that can create a bold textural statement in the garden. The leaves are a notable feature, starting out green and turning to a striking bronze-red in autumn. From late spring to midsummer, Rodgersia podophylla produces creamy-white flower panicles that are moderately showy and add a light, airy feel to its dense foliage.
In cultivation, Rodgersia podophylla is valued for its dramatic foliage and architectural form, making it a popular choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and waterside plantings. It thrives in damp, shady conditions, preferring neutral to acidic soils with good moisture retention. While it requires consistent moisture, it is important to avoid waterlogged conditions. Rodgersia podophylla should be planted in part shade to full shade to protect its leaves from scorching. The plant spreads gradually by underground rhizomes, forming clumps that can be divided in spring or autumn to manage its spread or to propagate new plants. The cultivar ’Rotlaub’ is particularly esteemed for its red-tinted foliage and has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. Gardeners should be aware that in some conditions, Rodgersia podophylla can spread vigorously, potentially outcompeting less robust plants.CC BY-SA 4.0
