Estimated Native Range
Summary
Rondeletia odorata, commonly known as Rondeletia, Cleveland Sunrise, or Panama-Rose, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the understory of tropical forests in Cuba and Panama. It typically grows up to 7 feet tall and is noted for its dense, rounded form. The leaves are rough, leathery, and can grow up to 2 inches long. Rondeletia odorata is particularly admired for its inflorescences, which are clusters of bright red flowers with yellow throats, blooming periodically throughout the year with a peak in late winter to spring. The flowers are highly ornamental and emit a pleasant fragrance, especially in the evening.
This plant is valued for its showy flowers and is often used in tropical and subtropical landscapes, including urban settings, as a specimen plant or for border planting. It thrives in well-drained soils, prefers full sun to partial shade, and requires regular watering to maintain its lush appearance. While it is not drought-tolerant, it can adapt to a range of soil types. There are three subspecies: Rondeletia odorata subsp. bullata, subsp. grandifolia, and subsp. odorata, which vary slightly in leaf size and flower color intensity. In cultivation, it may be susceptible to pests such as spider mites and whiteflies, especially when grown indoors or in dry conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
