Estimated Native Range
Summary
Rosa luciae, commonly known as Memorial Rose, is a deciduous climbing shrub native to forest edges and open woodlands in eastern Asia, including China and Japan. It typically grows to a height of 10-15 feet (3-4.5 meters) with a similar spread, and is characterized by its arching stems and glossy, dark green leaves. The flowers are single or semi-double, white with a yellow center, and bloom in late spring to early summer. The blooms are modestly showy and often followed by red or orange hips (fruits) in the fall.
Memorial Rose is valued for its vigorous growth habit, making it suitable for covering trellises, arbors, and fences. It is also appreciated for its disease resistance and low maintenance requirements. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to part shade, well-drained soil, and moderate watering. While it can tolerate a range of soil types, it thrives in loamy, slightly acidic to neutral pH soils. This rose is not commonly afflicted by serious pest or disease problems, but it can be susceptible to aphids and powdery mildew under certain conditions. Due to its potential invasiveness, it should be planted with caution and monitored for unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
