Summary

Rosa palustris, commonly known as Swamp Rose, is a deciduous shrub native to wetland habitats such as marshes, swamps, and wet woods in eastern North America, ranging from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in the north, south to Florida, and west to Arkansas and Ontario. It typically grows to a height of 3-6 feet (1-2 meters) with a similar spread, and features pinnate leaves with 5-9 leaflets and prickly stems. The flowers are showy, pink, and fragrant, blooming in early to mid-summer, and are followed by red hips that persist into winter, providing food for wildlife.

Swamp Rose is valued for its ornamental flowers and habitat value, supporting pollinators and serving as a host for the blinded sphinx moth and Coptotriche admirabilis. It is used in naturalistic plantings, rain gardens, and for erosion control near bodies of water. It thrives in full sun to part shade, prefers consistently moist to wet soils, and tolerates slow drainage. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to common rose diseases such as black spot and powdery mildew.CC BY-SA 4.0
