Estimated Native Range
Summary
Rosa xanthina, commonly known as Manchu Rose, is a deciduous shrub native to the open woodlands and forest edges of East Asia, including regions of China, Korea, and Mongolia. It typically grows to a height of 6-9 feet (1.8-2.7 meters) and a width of 7-10 feet (2.1-3 meters). The Manchu Rose is recognized for its arching branches and bristly stems. During the spring, it produces an abundance of fragrant, showy yellow flowers, which are a highlight of the plant’s appearance. After flowering, it may produce red or orange hips that add to its ornamental value.
The Manchu Rose is valued for its early spring blooms and is often used in garden borders, as a specimen plant, or for naturalizing in informal settings. It is relatively easy to maintain, requiring medium amounts of water and thriving in soils with medium drainage. Full sun is preferred to promote the best flowering. The cultivar ’Canary Bird’, with its slightly fragrant, pale yellow flowers, has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, indicating its exceptional performance in gardens. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to common rose afflictions such as black spot and powdery mildew. Pruning after flowering encourages new growth and helps maintain an attractive shape.CC BY-SA 4.0
