Summary
Rubus arcticus subsp. stellatus, commonly known as Alaskan Raspberry, Arctic Raspberry, Star Raspberry, Arctic Blackberry, or Nagoonberry, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to cool temperate regions, including the boreal forests and arctic tundra of the Russian Far East to Western Canada. It typically grows to a height and width of 0.5-1 feet (0.15-0.3 meters), forming a low, spreading habit. The plant is characterized by its trifoliate leaves and notable white to sometimes pink flowers that bloom in early to mid-summer, which are followed by edible, aromatic red berries that are highly prized for their flavor.
The Arctic Raspberry is valued for its edible fruit and as an ornamental ground cover in gardens. It is particularly well-suited for rock gardens, border fronts, and naturalized areas. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to part shade and thrives in medium, well-drained loam soils. While it requires medium amounts of water, it is also tolerant of wet conditions in its native habitat. Gardeners should be aware that this plant can spread via runners, potentially becoming aggressive in ideal conditions. It is, however, relatively low maintenance and is not commonly affected by serious pests or diseases.CC BY-SA 4.0
