Estimated Native Range
Summary
Rubus coreanus, commonly known as bokbunja or Korean blackberry, is a deciduous shrub native to forest edges, scrublands, and open woodlands in Korea and China. It typically grows to a height of 3-6 feet (1-2 meters) with a similar spread, featuring arching canes and sharp thorns. The leaves are compound with toothed leaflets. From late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of white to pale pink flowers, followed by the notable purple-black berries that ripen between May and July. The berries are highly regarded for their nutritional value, being rich in antioxidants.
Korean blackberry is valued for its edible fruit, which is used to make bokbunja ju, a traditional Korean fruit wine. The berries are also consumed fresh or processed into various products. In cultivation, Rubus coreanus prefers full sun to part shade, moist but well-drained soils, and requires regular pruning to maintain plant health and maximize fruit production. It is also used in traditional medicine. However, gardeners should be aware of its potential invasiveness outside its native range and its thorny canes, which may require careful handling and placement in the garden.CC BY-SA 4.0
