Summary

Rubus fraxinifolius, commonly known as Mountain Raspberry, is a semi-deciduous shrub native to montane forests, forest edges, and open woodlands in the Lesser Sunda Islands and Taiwan. It can reach heights of 2–3 meters and is characterized by its erect form and stems armed with thorns. The leaves are oval and pinnate, measuring 2–9 cm in length and 1.4 cm in width, with serrated margins. The shrub produces panicles of white flowers that are modest in showiness, followed by edible fruits that are orange to red, ovoid in shape, and up to 2.5 cm long by 1.5 cm in diameter, composed of numerous small drupelets. The fruiting season is typically in the fall.

Mountain Raspberry is appreciated for its edible fruits and is sometimes cultivated for this purpose. It is also used as an ornamental plant due to its attractive foliage and fruit. In cultivation, it requires full sun exposure, medium water levels, and well-drained soil. While it can be a beautiful addition to a garden, it is important to be aware of its potential to become invasive outside its native range. Gardeners should ensure it does not escape cultivation and become a problem in local ecosystems.CC BY-SA 4.0
