Summary

Rubus laciniatus, commonly known as cutleaf evergreen blackberry or evergreen blackberry, is a semi-deciduous to evergreen shrub native to North and Central Europe but has become naturalized and invasive in parts of North America and Australia. This vigorous plant can grow up to 10 feet tall and wide, with arching, prickly canes and distinctive palmately compound leaves that have deeply toothed subleaflets, giving a lacy appearance. The shrub produces white to pale pink flowers from late spring to early summer, which are moderately showy and followed by blackberries that are edible but not as flavorful as those of cultivated varieties.

The cutleaf evergreen blackberry is valued for its ability to form dense thickets that provide cover for wildlife and can be used for erosion control on slopes. However, its invasive nature and aggressive growth habit make it unsuitable for many garden settings. It thrives in a range of soil types, provided they are well-drained, and it prefers full sun to partial shade. Regular pruning is necessary to keep it under control. In regions where it is not invasive, it may be used as a barrier plant due to its thorny canes.CC BY-SA 4.0
