Estimated Native Range
Summary
Rubus niveus, commonly known as Mysore raspberry, is a deciduous scrambling shrub native to montane forests and forest edges in southern Asia, from Afghanistan to central China, Taiwan, and extending to Java and Indo-China. It typically grows up to 8 feet tall with arching stems that are covered in a whitish tomentum. The leaves of Mysore raspberry are pinnate with a dark green upper surface and a pale grey underside. It produces dark pink to red flowers which are followed by grey tomentose fruit that ripen to black, offering a striking contrast against the foliage.
Mysore raspberry is valued for its fruit, which can be used in jams, jellies, and desserts, and for its ornamental qualities in garden settings. However, it is known to be extremely invasive outside its native range, spreading rapidly and outcompeting native vegetation. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to part shade, moist but well-drained soils, and it can tolerate a range of soil types. Gardeners should be aware of its invasive potential and check local regulations before planting. It requires regular pruning to keep it under control and to maintain a tidy appearance.CC BY-SA 4.0
