Summary
Salvia ×sylvestris, commonly known as Wood Sage or Balkan Clary, is a hybrid perennial herb that is a result of crossing Salvia nemorosa and Salvia pratensis. It is native to a variety of habitats in Europe, including open woodlands and grasslands. This plant typically grows at a moderate rate to a height and width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). Wood Sage has a clumping form with square stems and ovate to lance-shaped leaves. From late spring to early summer, it produces dense spikes of purple or blue flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators and are considered quite showy.
Wood Sage is valued for its long flowering season and its ability to attract bees and butterflies, making it a beneficial addition to pollinator gardens. It is also drought-tolerant once established, which makes it a good choice for xeriscaping. Common uses in cultivation include border planting, rock gardens, and as a ground cover. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained loam or sandy soils with medium moisture. Although it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage a second bloom.CC BY-SA 4.0
