Summary

Salvia blepharophylla, commonly known as Eyelash-Leaved Sage, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the pine-oak forests and rocky areas of Northeast Mexico. This Salvia species typically grows to about 45 cm (18 in) in height and can spread rapidly through its stoloniferous growth habit. It features striking 2.5 cm (0.98 in) long signal-red flowers with an orange undertone, which bloom in loose whorls spaced about 2.5 cm (0.98 in) apart on 30 cm (12 in) long inflorescences. The flowering season extends from late spring through fall, providing a long-lasting display of vibrant color in the garden.

Eyelash-Leaved Sage is valued for its bright, showy flowers and its ability to attract pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies. It is well-suited for use in borders, rock gardens, and as a ground cover. This plant thrives in full sun to part shade and requires medium amounts of water, making it relatively easy to maintain. It prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, from sandy to loamy. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. It is not known to have aggressive roots or significant disease problems, but it can spread quickly and may need to be managed to prevent it from overtaking smaller plants nearby.CC BY-SA 4.0
