Summary
Salvia munzii, commonly known as Munz’s Sage, is an evergreen subshrub or shrub native to the chaparral and coastal sage scrub of Southern California and Baja California. It typically grows to a height of up to 2 meters (6.6 ft) and is characterized by its woody base, small, aromatic, gray-green leaves, and clear blue flowers. The bushy form of Munz’s Sage makes it a striking presence in the garden, with erect inflorescences bearing many interrupted clusters of flowers. Each flower cluster is subtended by a pair of lance-shaped, leaflike bracts, and the tubular blue corolla can be up to 1.5 centimeters long. The flowering season extends from January to May, offering a long period of visual interest and providing nectar for hummingbirds and butterflies.
Munz’s Sage is valued for its drought tolerance, making it suitable for xeriscaping and water-wise gardens. Its clear blue flowers are particularly attractive, and the plant can be used effectively in small gardens, perennial borders, or as a naturalistic planting in larger landscapes. Regular tip pruning can encourage bushier growth and enhance its appearance. It thrives in full sun and is adaptable to heavy soils, showing resistance to frost. While it can survive with low water once established, moderate watering, especially during the summer months, can keep the plant looking its best.CC BY-SA 4.0
