Summary
Sarcococca ruscifolia, commonly known as Fragrant Sweet Box, is an evergreen shrub native to the understory of woodland areas and forest margins in Central and Northern China. It typically grows to 1 m (3.3 ft) tall and broad, featuring glossy, leathery, oval leaves that are dark green in color. The plant is notable for its small, highly fragrant white flowers that bloom in late winter, often unnoticed until their sweet scent gives them away. These are followed by attractive red berries that mature to black. The flowers provide a valuable source of winter nectar for pollinators.
Fragrant Sweet Box is appreciated for its winter interest, low maintenance, and ability to thrive in shady conditions, making it ideal for planting in sheltered borders, urban gardens, and as ground cover under taller plants. It is also suitable for container gardening. The plant prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and can tolerate dry shade once established. It is hardy down to −15 °C (5 °F). The cultivar ‘Dragon Gate’ has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its garden performance. Potential problems include leaf spot and scale insects, but these are generally not significant. It is non-invasive and does not have aggressive roots, making it a safe choice for planting near structures.CC BY-SA 4.0
