Estimated Native Range
Summary
Saxifraga aizoides, commonly known as Yellow Mountain Saxifrage or Yellow Saxifrage, is an evergreen perennial that typically forms low-growing mats through branching at or below ground level. It reaches a modest height of 0.79-3.94 inches (2-10 cm) and spreads by short rhizomes. This plant is native to moist, alpine and subarctic regions, often found in habitats such as moist rock crevices, alongside streams, and in wet meadows where it can thrive in the cold, moist conditions. Its native range extends across North America, including Alaska and the Great Lakes region, and it is also found in European mountain ranges like the Tatra Mountains, Alps, and Svalbard.
Yellow Saxifrage produces bright yellow-green flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer, adding a splash of color to rock gardens and alpine plantings. The flowers are small but numerous, creating a showy effect when the plant is in full bloom. In cultivation, Yellow Saxifrage is valued for its ability to cover ground in challenging garden spots, such as rockeries or slopes, where other plants might struggle. It requires well-draining soil, consistent moisture, and can tolerate partial shade, though it prefers full sun. While it is not commonly affected by diseases, it can suffer from root rot if the soil is too wet. This plant is not known for being invasive and is generally easy to maintain in the right conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
