Summary
Saxifraga cuneifolia, commonly known as lesser Londonpride, shield-leaved saxifrage, or spoon-leaved saxifrage, is an herbaceous perennial native to the damp, shady environments of mountainous regions in central and southern Europe. It is typically found in deciduous and mixed woodlands, often on shaded rocks and boulders, and thrives in humus-rich soil at altitudes of 1312-5249 feet (400-1600 meters). This plant forms a basal rosette of fleshy, wedge-shaped leaves and reaches a modest height of 4-10 inches (10-25 cm). From May to July, it produces a loose, branched inflorescence with delicate white petals that are subtly attractive rather than showy.
Lesser Londonpride is valued for its foliage texture and its ability to grow in shaded, moist conditions where other plants may struggle. It is often used in rock gardens, woodland gardens, and shaded borders. In cultivation, it requires consistently moist soil with good drainage and prefers part shade to full shade. While it is not a high-maintenance plant, it can suffer from root rot if overwatered or if the soil does not drain well. It is not known for serious disease or pest issues, but slugs can sometimes be a problem. Lesser Londonpride is not typically invasive and is a charming addition to the shaded areas of a garden, offering a lush, green presence throughout the growing season.CC BY-SA 4.0
