Summary
Saxifraga fortunei, commonly known as Fortune Saxifrage, is a semi-deciduous perennial herb native to forest margins, stream banks, and moist, shaded rocky areas in South Central China, Korea, and Japan. It typically grows to a modest size of 40 cm (16 in) in both height and width. The plant features large, round, fleshy leaves that can sometimes exhibit a red or pink flush. During the summer, it produces slender, branched stalks topped with panicles of small, starry white flowers. Notably, the two lower petals of each flower are significantly longer than the others, adding to its unique appearance.
Fortune Saxifrage is valued for its adaptability to shaded garden areas where other plants may struggle. It is particularly noted for its attractive foliage and delicate flowers, which can add a touch of elegance to woodland gardens, shaded borders, or as a ground cover. This plant prefers well-drained, moist soil and thrives in deep to partial shade. While it requires consistent moisture, it is important to avoid waterlogged conditions. Fortune Saxifrage has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, indicating its excellence for garden use. It is also a parent to numerous hybrids and cultivars, many of which have received the same award. Gardeners should be aware that while generally disease-free, it can suffer from root rot if drainage is poor.CC BY-SA 4.0
