Summary

Saxifraga stolonifera, commonly known as Creeping Saxifrage or Strawberry Begonia, is an evergreen perennial herb native to forest floors, rocky areas, and along streams in South and East Asia, particularly in Japan, Korea, and China. It typically grows 10 to 20 cm tall and is known for its attractive foliage and delicate flowers. The plant forms a low-growing mat with rounded, heart-shaped leaves that are green with silver-gray veins on the upper surface and reddish-purple underneath. The stolons, resembling those of strawberry plants, bear plantlets at their tips, facilitating vegetative spread. During late spring to early summer, Creeping Saxifrage produces loose, airy panicles of small, zygomorphous flowers. The flowers feature two larger lanceolate white petals that are 6-15 mm long and three smaller petals dotted with red or yellow, creating a striking contrast. The stamens are 4.5 mm long, and the ovary is a pale yellow, adding to the ornamental appeal.

Creeping Saxifrage is valued for its ground-covering ability, attractive foliage, and charming flowers. It has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its beauty and reliability in gardens. Ideal for shaded rock gardens, woodland settings, and as underplanting for larger shrubs, it thrives in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. While it prefers part shade to full shade, it can tolerate more sun in cooler climates if kept moist. It is generally easy to maintain but should be monitored for slugs and snails, which can damage the foliage. Creeping Saxifrage is not known for being invasive but can spread in favorable conditions, so gardeners may need to manage its growth to prevent it from overtaking other plants.CC BY-SA 4.0
