Summary
Scaevola angulata, commonly known as Fan-flower or Fairy Fan-flower, is a perennial shrub native to coastal regions of Australia and Papua New Guinea, including coastal dunes, rocky outcrops, and cliff faces. It is particularly adapted to sandy soils and can be found in a variety of coastal habitats, from the subtropical zones in the north to the temperate regions in the south. This plant exhibits a moderate growth rate and typically reaches a height of 0.5-1 feet (0.15-0.3 meters) with a spread of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). Its foliage is comprised of succulent leaves that are able to withstand dry conditions, and it produces distinctive fan-shaped flowers that are white or blue and particularly showy during the spring and summer months.
Fan-flower is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to thrive in coastal conditions, making it an excellent choice for seaside gardens. The showy flowers attract pollinators, adding to its horticultural appeal. It is commonly used as a ground cover, in rockeries, and in containers where its cascading habit can be showcased. For optimal growth, it requires full sun to part shade, and it prefers sandy or loamy soils with good drainage. While it tolerates medium amounts of water, it is also quite drought-resistant once established.CC BY-SA 4.0
