Estimated Native Range
Summary
Scaevola calliptera, commonly known as Bushy Fanflower or Mountain Fanflower, is a perennial herb native to open eucalypt woodlands and forest margins in Southeastern Australia. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height and width of 0.3-2 feet (0.09-0.6 meters). The plant features fan-shaped flowers that are blue or purple and bloom profusely in the spring and summer, adding a splash of color to the garden. The foliage is dense and can be quite attractive even when the plant is not in flower.
Bushy Fanflower is valued for its showy flowers and its ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. It is often used in borders, rockeries, and as ground cover in gardens. It is also suitable for container planting, allowing gardeners with limited space to enjoy its beauty. This species is relatively easy to maintain, requiring medium amounts of water and thriving in a range of soil types, including clay, loam, or sandy soils, provided they have good drainage. It prefers full sun to part shade, which encourages the best flowering. While generally disease-resistant, it can occasionally suffer from fungal issues in overly moist conditions. It is not known for being invasive and does not typically present problems with aggressive roots.CC BY-SA 4.0
