Estimated Native Range
Summary
Schefflera taiwaniana, commonly known as Hardy Umbrella Plant, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the cloud forests and mountainous regions of Taiwan. It typically grows to 4 meters (13 feet) tall and 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) broad. The plant features large, palmate leaves up to 15 cm (5.9 inches) long, which are a notable characteristic. Young leaves are covered in silver hairs that give them a distinctive appearance, while mature leaves are glossy and have a smooth surface. In late summer, Schefflera taiwaniana produces sprays of subtle flowers, which are not particularly showy but are followed by dark, spherical berries in winter. These berries are a valuable food source for local wildlife, including insects and birds.
The Hardy Umbrella Plant is appreciated for its architectural foliage and its ability to add a tropical feel to temperate gardens. It is used in cultivation for urban planting, as a focal point in borders, and for adding evergreen structure. It is relatively easy to maintain, requiring medium amounts of water and thriving in well-drained soils. While it prefers full sun or part shade, it can tolerate a range of light conditions, making it versatile for different garden settings. Schefflera taiwaniana is frost-tender and should be protected from severe cold. It is generally disease-resistant, but can occasionally suffer from scale insects or mealybugs.CC BY-SA 4.0
