Estimated Native Range
Summary
Schoenoplectus lacustris, commonly known as lakeshore bulrush, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to wetland habitats such as marshes, fens, wet meadows, and edges of lakes, rivers, and ponds. It is found across Europe, parts of Asia, and North Africa. This species typically grows up to 11 feet tall and features round, hollow, green stems with bladeless sheaths. The inflorescence, which emerges at the top of the stem, consists of branching clusters of brownish spikelets, and it blooms from late spring to mid-summer. The flowers are not particularly showy but are of ecological importance.
Lakeshore bulrush is valued for its role in stabilizing shorelines and providing habitat for wildlife. It is often used in constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment and in riparian restoration projects. In cultivation, it requires full sun to part shade, consistently moist to wet soil, and can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay. While it is not commonly grown in conventional gardens, it is a vital component of water gardens and naturalized areas. This species can spread aggressively by rhizomes in favorable conditions, so care should be taken when introducing it to small ponds or water features.CC BY-SA 4.0
