Estimated Native Range
Summary
Schoenoplectus litoralis, commonly known as Shore Bulrush or Coastal Club-rush, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to coastal wetlands, including salt marshes, estuaries, and the edges of brackish lakes in Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 1.5-3 feet (0.46-0.9 meters) and a width of 2-2.5 feet (0.6-0.8 meters). The plant features stiff, upright stems with brown, inconspicuous flowers that bloom in the summer. The inflorescences are not particularly showy, but they do provide an interesting textural contrast in water garden settings.
Shore Bulrush is valued for its ability to stabilize soil and filter water, making it an excellent choice for naturalizing in wetland restoration projects and for use in constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. It is also used ornamentally in water gardens and along pond edges. This species thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It requires very slow draining clay, loam, or sandy soils, and it must have high or very high amounts of water, often growing in standing water. While generally low-maintenance, it can spread aggressively if conditions are ideal, so care should be taken to manage its growth in smaller garden settings.CC BY-SA 4.0
