Summary

Schoenoplectus pungens, commonly known as Common Threesquare, is a semi-deciduous perennial grass native to a wide range of wetland habitats including freshwater and brackish marshes, wet meadows, and the edges of ponds and streams across North and South America, as well as parts of Europe and Australia and New Zealand. It typically grows up to 1.5 meters (4 feet 11 inches) tall and features stiff, sharply triangular stems, which give rise to its common name. The foliage is dark green, rough, and dense, contributing to its utility in erosion control. Small, inconspicuous flowers are grouped in dense spikelets, with 1–7 spikelets on each stem, blooming in the summer. The seeds are brown and are an important food source for wildlife.

Common Threesquare is valued for its adaptability to wet conditions and its use in stabilizing soil, making it suitable for riparian restoration projects and wetland gardens. It thrives in full sun or part shade and requires high amounts of water, preferring soils with medium to fast drainage. While it is resistant to fire, which can be beneficial in fire-prone regions, care should be taken as it can become invasive outside its native range, potentially outcompeting native species.CC BY-SA 4.0
