Estimated Native Range
Summary
Scilla mischtschenkoana, commonly known as White Squill, is a deciduous bulbous perennial herb native to alpine meadows and rocky slopes in the Caucasus and northern Iran. It typically grows to a height of 5 to 15 cm (2.0 to 5.9 in) and a similar width, with 2-3 strap-shaped, glossy green leaves. The plant produces racemes of star-shaped, pale blue to white flowers with darker blue veins, which are particularly showy in early spring or late winter, often emerging before the last snows have melted.
White Squill is valued for its early bloom time, providing a splash of color in the garden when few other plants are flowering. It is ideal for naturalizing in lawns, woodland gardens, and rock gardens, or for underplanting beneath deciduous trees and shrubs. The cultivar ’Tubergeniana’ has been recognized with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its garden performance. This plant prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to part shade. It requires moderate watering, especially during the growing season, and is relatively low maintenance once established.CC BY-SA 4.0
